We can protect our ocean by ensuring that it’s fished responsibly and that consumers know how to choose certified sustainable seafood.
The ocean has provided nutritious food for nearly two million years. Not only that, but it is also vital for the air we breathe, the livelihoods of millions of people, and so much more. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) sustainable seafood program aims to keep it that way. Because we can have the best of both worlds: enjoying all that seafood has to offer while caring for our oceans, our fishers, and our communities.
Whether you love scallops and oysters or stick to fish ‘n’ chips, eating seafood has myriad benefits. It’s packed with vital nutrients, including zinc, iron, selenium, vitamins A and B12, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Wild-caught seafood is also a planet-friendly option. It naturally has a lower carbon footprint than other animal protein sources, with less than one tenth the amount of CO2 emissions associated with red meat. Fishing also has a lower environmental impact than land-based animal farming because it uses very little land or fresh water, and doesn’t require feed or fertilizers.
Supporting sustainability
The MSC is on a mission to end overfishing and ensure seafood is caught sustainably. It supports healthy oceans and helps protect food security and livelihoods by working with fisheries, scientists, and industry stakeholders to make sure our ocean is fished sustainably and that it’s easy for consumers to find and buy certified sustainable seafood. The MSC blue fish label clearly marks products that come from MSC certified sustainable fisheries, giving consumers the confidence that they’re helping to ensure a healthy and productive ocean for generations to come.
As our global population grows and the need for more sustainable food systems hits a tipping point, it’s crucial that we maximize the potential oceans have to feed us by harvesting them sustainably. Research has shown that by taking care of the ocean and only fishing what it can provide, we could actually gather more fish. Ending overfishing could increase global annual seafood production by 16 million tonnes — according to the MSC, enough to meet the protein needs of an additional 72 million people per year. And with global demand for seafood expected to double by 2050, it’s important that we support and recognize fisheries that are managed sustainably. By choosing MSC-certified seafood, consumers can support responsible fishing practices, contribute to the conservation of marine ecosystems, and drive demand for sustainable products.
