Building a Skilled Workforce: A Program Laying the Foundation for Career-Ready Tradespeople

The Building a Skilled Workforce program equips individuals ages 18-29 with the skills and training they need to enter the skilled trades workforce.

As part of Skills Ontario’s DE&I Initiatives, participants receive one to four weeks of comprehensive training at no cost before being placed in permanent jobs in fields like construction, manufacturing, general labor, and carpentry.

While working, participants benefit from up to three months of wrap-around support, including toolkits, transportation, and childcare assistance, to help ease their transition into new roles. By the end of the program, this initiative will have helped 120 participants start their careers in the skilled trades.

“I find my role incredibly rewarding. Supporting participants as they begin their skilled trades journey is enriching. Hearing about their achievements and professional growth highlights the importance of the support we offer. I take pride in providing guidance and wrap-around support, ensuring they have the tools to succeed during training and in their careers. It’s an honor to be part of a program shaping the future of our skilled workforce,” said Tanika Wilson, Case Manager for Building a Skilled Workforce.

The Building a Skilled Workforce program is made possible through partnerships with trade unions and industry leaders, all committed to fostering a diverse and skilled workforce.
