Canada’s Circular Economy: Tackling Waste and Delivering Value

Circular Economy Leadership Canada tackles waste by rethinking resources. CELC drives innovation and policy, uniting sectors for resilience and equity. Join the movement for a waste-free future.

As the costs of our products increase – from food to clothing, housing to cars – waste is a luxury no one can afford.

Every sector is grappling with the unsustainable costs – economic, environmental, and social – of “business as usual”. Inefficient supply chains are more vulnerable to disruption, carrying greater environmental and social liabilities, as well as increased business risk.

We need a new model that rethinks our production processes, supply chains, material resource use, and consumption patterns. This is one of the most critical challenges of our time.

To address this, businesses and industries are embracing a multi-trillion dollar global opportunity to eliminate waste, improve productivity, enhance competitiveness, and maximize value. It’s called the “circular economy”.

The concept of the circular economy has gained significant momentum in recent years as an alternative to the traditional linear economy, which follows a “take, make, dispose” model. The goal is to retain the highest value from our resources for as long as possible, by designing out waste and leveraging innovative business models focused on optimal material use, re-use, repair, refurbishment, recycling, and the regeneration of nature.

By bringing together leaders from the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors, Circular Economy Leadership Canada (CELC) is catalyzing the development of innovative circular economy solutions.  CELC serves as a national hub and international bridge for more than 65 partner organizations, connecting people to the knowledge, networks, and opportunities that accelerate circular innovation across Canada’s economy.

CELC is dedicated to bringing value by:

  • Championing a national approach to the circular economy, including advancing priority actions with our Circular Economy Action Plan for Canada
  • Focusing on the critical enablers for advancing circularity across all sectors, including improving access to data and information to support strategic decision making and highlight the benefits of the circular economy, working with government at all levels on supportive policy, and engaging with the finance sector to increase the access to capital and funding for circular economy businesses, projects, and infrastructure.
  • Accelerating circular economy transitions in resource sectors of strategic importance to Canada, including through the launch of a new Circular Construction Innovation Hub that is bringing together the construction and real estate sector to improve the business case and accelerate the adoption of circular strategies and practices.
  • Supporting convening and relationship building across Canada’s circular economy ecosystem, including through our online community platform and our flagship event, the Canadian Circular Economy Summit – Canada’s largest event on the circular economy, bringing more than 900 leaders from business, government, and civil society to Montreal this April 15-17, 2025.

The circular economy has transformative potential for addressing some of Canada’s most pressing challenges, from tackling climate change, to delivering more affordable housing, ensuring food security, building resilience across communities, fostering a diverse and equitable workforce, and boosting productivity and competitiveness.
