Advancing New Canadian Women in Technology Program
Advancing New Canadian Women in Technology (ANCWT) is a bridging employment program for new immigrant and refugee women who have technical skills in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). ANCWT’s mission is to empower women and to help skilled immigrant and refugee women to find employment in their fields in Canada. ANCWT reduces systemic barriers faced by refugee and immigrant women who are highly qualified but may not have experience in the Canadian job market.
Founder Dr. Abdul-Majid
The founder of the program, Dr. Sawsan Abdul-Majid, is herself an immigrant from Iraq who came to Canada in 1999 and who has found success in her field. Dr. Abdul-Majid has a PhD in Electrical Engineering (optical communications) from Varna University, Bulgaria, and has been at the University of Ottawa as a researcher, project manager, and part-time professor for 15 years. Dr. Abdul-Majid understands – from experience – how challenging it can be for newcomer women with technical backgrounds to adapt to the Canadian job market and would like to facilitate this transition for others.

New Champion of Diversity Award
ANCWT is happy to announce that Dr. Abdul-Majid has been awarded a 2023 Champion of Diversity Award by the Government of Ontario. This award is in recognition of Dr. Abdul-Majid’s considerable commitment to assisting immigrant and refugee women from STEM fields through ANCWT. For over 7 years, she has helped over 80 women with technical skills in engineering and technology find employment in their fields.
