Building Our Way Forward.

Thomas Mueller

President & CEO Canada Green Building Council

A note from Thomas Mueller, President & CEO, Canada Green Building Council

For over 20 years, the Canada Green Building Council has accelerated green building together with our members and stakeholders from across the building sector.

Today, investment in green infrastructure is critical to achieve Canada’s 2030 emission reduction targets. For the building sector, this requires we scale up energy-efficient, zero carbon new construction and deep retrofits.

Green buildings are effective in achieving climate and other environmental goals while producing cost savings and returns on investment. They bolster Canada’s economy, with the potential to deliver up to 1.5 million jobs by 2030. They are also highly efficient, protecting against fluctuations in energy pricing, improving health outcomes, and increasing resiliency against extreme weather events.

Faced with unprecedented investment in housing development, Canada must tie new housing and infrastructure to sustainability outcomes. Failure to do so will leave Canadians with higher energy costs and require costly retrofits in the future.

We believe that nothing prevents Canada from building better. In fact, CAGBC has certified over 6,000 buildings under the LEED rating system and Zero Carbon Building Standards, proving that green, zero-carbon buildings can be achieved affordably.

However, a more sustainable future requires collaboration. CAGBC is committed to providing a platform for the public and private sectors to come together to accelerate better buildings for all Canadians.
