How can engineering students utilize their degrees in different fields of work?
Engineering students can leverage their degrees in diverse fields beyond traditional engineering roles. The combination of analytical thinking, problem-solving, and technical expertise opens doors to a variety of careers. For me personally, my engineering background and experience in construction helped me start a career in real estate development, which has always been a passion of mine. How has your engineering background helped shape your career in real estate?
My engineering background has been instrumental in shaping my career in real estate in many ways, specifically my technical expertise and problem-solving skills.
My understanding of construction methods has given me a strong foundation to evaluate properties and manage building projects effectively. This technical insight helps me assess the quality of construction and address issues that may arise.
Engineering has also honed my ability to think critically and solve complex problems. In real estate, these skills come in handy when troubleshooting project challenges, navigating zoning regulations, or optimizing the functionality of a space. There’s also an element of effective communication in problem solving that I learnt in construction management that I still use today in real estate development.
What advice do you have for engineering students coming into the working landscape?
Think of your career as a long-term journey rather than a single destination. Your first job may not be your dream role, but it can serve as a valuable stepping stone, equipping you with the skills and experience to move closer to your goals. Every opportunity, no matter how small, contributes to your growth and opens doors to new possibilities.
I started in transportation design, transitioned into construction management, and eventually found my way into high-rise development at a financial firm. This progression didn’t happen overnight—it was the result of showing up every day, learning on the job, and leveraging my network to uncover the right path.
Embrace each phase of your career with curiosity and determination. Build meaningful connections, be open to new experiences, and don’t be afraid to pivot as you discover what truly excites and fulfills you. Success comes from persistence, adaptability, and the willingness to take calculated risks, knowing that every step is part of the bigger picture.
