From Rome’s aqueducts to Ontario’s highways, learn how investments in infrastructure are and always have been a key driver of progress.

Infrastructure has long been one of the defining cornerstones of societal development. From ancient road networks to water irrigation systems like aqueducts and dams, infrastructure has shaped civilizations for millennia. Iconic structures such as Roman temples, palaces, forts, and defensive walls stand as reminders of how infrastructure played a key role in the prosperity of ancient societies. The Roman Empire, in particular, boasted remarkable infrastructure that lasted for centuries, contributing to its dominance and influence.

The Roman Empire’s infrastructure innovations spanned 500 years, from 27 BC to 476 AD. Their road networks, such as the Appian Way, facilitated both trade and military movement, while aqueducts like the Pont du Gard brought fresh water into cities, supporting agriculture, industry, and public health. Entertainment venues like the Colosseum and defense systems like Hadrian’s Wall symbolized Roman power and organization. However, with the empire’s eventual decline, much of this infrastructure fell into disrepair, serving as a cautionary tale about the fragility of even the greatest civilizations.

A key to economic growth

Today, infrastructure continues to be vital to societal development, albeit with more advanced technologies. Roads, water and wastewater systems, and buildings—often taken for granted—are integral to our daily lives. These structures ensure safety, convenience, and economic growth, all while supporting the growing needs of expanding populations. Ontario, home to over 16 million people, is a prime example of a region that is heavily reliant on ongoing infrastructure investment to sustain its growth and economic strength.

As Ontario’s population continues to grow, the need for repairs, upgrades, and new infrastructure has become increasingly urgent. The province of Ontario announced a historic 10-year, $190 billion infrastructure plan. This investment—the largest in Ontario’s history—focuses on critical areas such as roads, bridges, public transit systems, broadband, long-term care facilities, and educational institutions. At a time when inflation and tariffs pose additional challenges, the responsible management of such an enormous investment is crucial for long-term success.

Building a resilient future for Ontario

This forward-thinking approach ensures that Ontario can continue to thrive as an economic powerhouse in Canada, avoiding the mistakes of the past, like those seen in ancient Rome. By prioritizing infrastructure, Ontario is positioning itself for continued growth and stability, ensuring that the province remains resilient for generations to come.

Speaking of infrastructure, the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) Conference & Awards Gala – themed Building Ontario is a great way to explore the challenges and opportunities facing Ontario when it comes to infrastructure. This event, taking place at Caesar’s Windsor, June 13 – 15 is a chance to join leaders at the forefront of infrastructure for insightful discussions, engaging sessions, and networking opportunities. With multiple ticket options, it’s the perfect event for anyone passionate about the future of Ontario’s infrastructure.
